SUMATRA - GEGARANG AULIA (WET-HULLED)
Sumatra is not subtle. It's earthy, heavy-bodied, and unapologetically itself. If you like bright, fruity coffees, this is not that. If you want something brooding and contemplative with thick body and dark chocolate intensity, this is exactly that.
This wet-hulled coffee from Aulia Kahfi delivers what Sumatra does best: pungent sweetness, torched sugar notes, and dark cocoa laced with mulling spices like cinnamon and clove. There's an herbal earthiness running through it: tobacco leaf, toasted barley, hints of scorched wood in the finish. It's complex in a completely different direction than our Ethiopian or Honduras offerings.
We roast this darker (Full City+) to lean into its strengths. The body becomes thick and satiny, coating your palate with bittersweet 90% cacao bar intensity. It makes exceptional espresso, inky, rich, with chocolate bonbon and brulée crust flavors that hold up beautifully in milk drinks.
Why Wet-Hulled (Giling Basah): This is traditional Indonesian processing—the beans are hulled while still wet, creating those distinctive earthy, herbaceous notes Sumatra is known for. It's unconventional. It produces flavors some people find too intense. Those people should probably order something else.
Roast Level: Full City+
Tasting Notes: Dark chocolate, mulling spice, torched sugar, tobacco, earthy
Who This Is For: People who drink their coffee black and like it strong. Espresso enthusiasts. Anyone tired of bright, acidic coffees. Customers who describe their coffee preference as "dark and bold" and actually mean it.
Fair Warning: This is polarizing coffee. If you're unsure, start with our Brazil. If you know you want something heavy, earthy, and intense—this is your coffee.
